How many panels should a comic page have?

Three to six for most pages. Panel count is a pacing decision, not a design one, and in an AI comic it is also a cost decision. Of the 437 layouts Panel Haus ships, two thirds are between two and five panels.

Three to six for most pages. Fewer than three when you want a moment to land hard, more than six only for deliberate chaos or a montage.

That is the useful answer. The reason behind it is that panel count is not a layout preference, it is how you control time, and in an AI comic it is also how you control spend.

Panels are units of time

A page is not a picture with boxes on it. Each panel is a beat, and the space between them is the reader skipping forward.

More panels means faster and busier. Six or eight small panels read as a staccato run: quick exchanges, rapid action, a scene covering a lot of ground. The eye moves quickly because each box holds less.

Fewer panels means slower and heavier. A page with two panels forces the reader to sit in each one. That is why a big panel feels emotional even when nothing dramatic is drawn in it. You gave it room, so the reader gives it time.

This is the whole lever, and it works in both directions. If a page feels rushed, it usually has too many panels rather than too little dialogue. If a page feels like it is dragging, cutting three panels into one is often the fix.

What the shipped library actually looks like

We ship 437 layouts across the four canvases a member can select. Counted from the config, here is how they distribute by panel count:

Three panels is the single largest bucket at 105 layouts, and that holds on the comic book canvas specifically, where 24 of 73 layouts are three panel arrangements.

This is not a house opinion. It is what a library built out of how comics are actually laid out settles into on its own. Two thirds of everything is between two and five panels, and the tail past six exists mostly for grids and montages.

The constraint nobody mentions: dialogue

Every panel carrying dialogue needs somewhere for the bubble to go, and that space comes out of the art.

Six panels on a page means six bubbles competing for room, and small panels have very little of it. The result is bubbles covering faces, which is the fastest way to make a page look amateur.

The practical rule: the more panels on the page, the less of them can carry speech. A six panel page with dialogue in two of them reads fine. A six panel page with dialogue in all six is a wall. If every beat needs a line, you want fewer, bigger panels.

The constraint that only exists in AI comics

Here is the part that is genuinely new. In a drawn comic, panel count costs you time. In an AI comic, each panel is a generation, so panel count is a line item.

A six panel page costs twice as much to fill as a three panel page. Across a twenty page book that is not a rounding error, it is the difference between a comic and two comics, on the numbers in what an AI comic costs.

Two things follow.

A splash page is the cheapest page you will ever make. One generation for a whole page, and it is also the highest impact layout in comics. That is a rare case of the cheap option and the good option being the same option.

Dense grids are expensive and often wasted. Nine small panels means nine generations, each rendered at a size where the detail you paid for is not visible. If you want a montage, consider whether four panels would read the same.

Where the splash page belongs

Roughly a fifth of the library is single panel, and that ratio is about right for a book too, but not evenly spread.

Use a splash for the opening, the reveal, and the ending. Traditionally it goes on a page turn, so the reader commits to turning and then gets hit. Two or three in a twenty page book is plenty. A book of splash pages is a portfolio, not a comic.

Choose the layout before you generate

This is the workflow mistake that costs the most.

The panel's shape determines the image's shape. A composition built for a square does not survive being dropped into a tall narrow panel, and one built for a wide letterbox does not survive a square. Picking the layout first means every generation is made to fit the hole it is going into, which is the same argument as composing for panels rather than posters.

Working the other way round, generating first and choosing a layout after, means cropping away parts of images you paid for, and discovering that your best panel is the wrong shape.

The short version

Three to six panels, most of the time. Fewer when a moment needs weight, more when you want speed. Keep dialogue in a minority of the panels on a busy page. Remember that every extra panel is another generation, so a splash page is both the cheapest and the most dramatic thing you can do. And choose the layout before you generate, not after, because the shape of the hole should decide the shape of the picture.
